Behind The Scenes

April 2013: I answered the phone one day to a big surprise. The caller was yet another former Sara Lee employee who had found our website. Her name is Donna, and she has a collection of photos from our big project. Donna is one of the production line workers who was chosen to work on the royal icing paintings for the nation’s birthday cake, and happily for posterity, she photographed a record of the project.

So let’s start with Donna herself. Here she is with one of her assignments, the depiction of Alexander Graham Bell making the first phone call to his assistant Watson.

Casey Sinkeldam, Sara Lee’s top pastry chef and leader of the team preparing the decorations for the cake, letters the Gettysburg Address on this royal icing painting.

Pastry chef Pierre shows off the painting honoring Thomas Edison.
