Woman urges stiff sentence for killer

A Brookdale woman is circulating fliers urging people to write to a Madera County judge who will decide how long her daughter’s killer will be jailed.

Jacob Lee Travis, 33, of Fresno, will be sentenced March 7 for the 1997 murder of former Brookdale resident Andrea “Annie” Born.

Travis was a former boyfriend of Born, 20, a Fresno State Student. He allegedly shot her and left her body burning in an olive orchard off Highway 99.

He was arrested two years ago and recently pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. As part of a plea bargain, he faces 15 years to life in prison.

Born’s mother, Gloria Barnes of Brookdale, said he could be eligible for parole and wants letters urging the maximum sentence to be sent to Judge Bender, Superior Court, County of Madera, 209 W. Yosemite Ave., Madera, CA 93637, referencing case No. CR07823.
