GOVERNOR DAVIS OFFERS $50,000 REWARD
IN THE 1997 MURDER OF MADERA WOMAN
Victim Was Shot And Then Set Ablaze
SACRAMENTO—Governor Gray Davis today issued a proclamation offering $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals charged with the commission of any offense punishable by death, in connection with the murder of Andrea Born.
The request for the reward was made by Sheriff John P. Anderson of Madera County and the victim’s family.

WHEREAS, Andrea Born, 21, was found murdered on July 4, 1997; and
WHEREAS, she had been shot in the head and her body had been doused with a flammable liquid and set on fire; and
WHEREAS, the investigation of this homicide has been seriously hindered by a lack of information, including eyewitness accounts; and
WHEREAS, Madera County Sheriff John Anderson has requested that a reward be offered to encourage any individuals with information about this murder to contact law enforcement officials; and
WHEREAS, Sheriff Anderson has stated in his correspondence, “We believe certain people have first hand knowledge of this crime. We need an incentive for them to speak out in regards to this case;” and
WHEREAS, the assistance and awareness of the general public is essential to the proper functioning of law enforcement and the criminal justice system, and offers of monetary rewards often encourage public cooperation in the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of the person or persons responsible for them; and
WHEREAS, the Governor is empowered under Penal Code section 1547(a) to offer rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person who is charged with the commission of an offense punishable by death; and
WHEREAS, the family of the victim is in full support of the reward;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GRAY DAVIS, Governor of the State of California, do hereby post a reward in the total amount of $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals charged with the commission of any offense punishable by death, in connection with the murder of Andrea Born.
