Carl Smith was a local man who lived nearby. Carl had a very large family, nine children as I recall. The Smiths were all energetic and hard workers, and they made the most of what little they had. As a routine Carl fed his family with whatever wild game he could shoot. Once when we were visiting their house, Carl stood up, grabbed his rifle, stepped over to the kitchen window, and dropped a deer who was feeding nearby. It wasn’t dramatic or shocking. As I said, it was routine.
Carl was a jack of many trades and master of several. His carpentry skills were invaluable in helping my Dad to restore the house.
