April 3, 2013: From home to Alpine, Texas

Some 400 miles on a rare rainy day (so glad we got some at home!), and we were in this little town in far west Texas. Some 85 miles to the south was Big Bend National Park, our first destination. You'd think after 35 years in Texas, we would have seen this major attraction before now, but this was our first visit.

We spent a pleasant evening in Alpine and got a good night's sleep before heading out to Big Bend the next morning.

You know us: We're always drawn to cactus. These brilliant cactus flowers are the only photos we took right in Alpine. Another visitor marveled at their brilliant, waxy appearance and wondered if they were real.
