Scholarship established in honor of Annie

While Chris was at the A.W.A.K.E Walk on this day, I was busy with the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT). This week has been our 22nd annual conference and trade show, held here in Austin. At the luncheon today, the new board of directors and officers were sworn in, and a number of awards were presented.

Earlier this year the RCAT board established a scholarship fund for educational assistance to members and their families. A few months ago, the board voted unanimously to name this the "Annie Born Memorial Scholarship Award."

And today, at the luncheon, the first award was presented to Adriana Alcala, whose father is an estimator for Weeks Roofing in El Paso. It was a real pleasure for me to meet Adriana and talk with her about her plans and about Annie. She's a very nice young woman, and she's thrilled to have the scholarship award.

Adriana is now a freshman at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque. She was sponsored for the scholarship award by Laura Gomez of Gomez Roofing in El Paso, whom Adriana holds in very high regard (as we all do). Adriana writes us from school:

I am proud and honored to be the first to receive this scholarship. It means a lot to me, and I will make the most of it. When visiting Annie's Place, I knew how much this scholarship really means to you.

I read every article on your web site, and it really touched my heart. We all look for role models when we are children. Most of us do not know that the role models we seek are only a few steps away from us. I believe people like Laura and Annie are too important to us to be role models. People like Laura and Annie come along once in a lifetime. and it is an honor just to get to know them.

Well, I know for sure that Annie would have been honored to know Adriana too. They've both got the same strong and loving spirit.

The Annie Born Memorial Scholarship is still being awarded every year by the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas.
