My mother's workThis is a very special quilt in our family. You can read below how it came to be made. When my mother later decided to give this quilt to me, she missed it so much that she made another one just like it! She kept that second quilt on her own bed for the rest of her life. I love how the arrangement of light and dark fabrics accentuates the linked circles.

This inscription on the quilt back says:

50th Anniversary Quilt—Old and New

In 1987 a friend in Maine gave me several nine-patch blocks pieced by anonymous hands with prints from the 1930's. By trimming the corners on 48 of them and combining them with prints of the 1980's I was able to make this quilt; it was inspired by Judy Martin's "Maltese Circles."

Since I was married in 1939, there is a link between the old fabrics of that time and the quilt's completion in 1989, the year of our 50th wedding anniversary.
